The first mention of Almarod in the New World is recorded as Peter and Anna Almarod members of the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church (New York City) around 1670. This had formerly been the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam. Logically, it would appear that the now Almaroad-Almarode name is of Dutch/German (Palitinate) Fleming origin as this was ethnic backgroud of the early settlers to this area. Further evidence of this is found when Anna's name appears on the "List of Palatines residing in New York City dated 1710." This list is repeated in "Hotten's 30,000 immigrants to the New World." Anna is described as being a widow, head of a family, and being 67 years of age. This would purt her birth as 1643. A general description lists these people as Fleming/Wallons/Dutch/German. The Palatinate is in NW Germany today and borders South Holland. It is a mixed area even now. A number of spellings were used: Almarod, Almerodr, Almerodrin. All of these are of Frankish/Germanic orgin. Best definition is in middle frankish (800-1100 A.D.) meaning long piece of land.
Because of the New Amsterdam connection, it can be supposed that Peter was a skilled worker of some sort. There are no found or existing records that mention the names of their children. However, there is a record of a Heinrich, Hendrick or Henry Almerod in 1745 in Lancaster County, PA. Lancaster is now famous for its Amish Families. However, then as now, they were a distinct minority of population. The general population of the area were Dutch/German/English extraction and spoke a mixture of low German/Dutch/English. Undoubtedly this is a descendent of Peter and Anna.
THE ALABAMA CONNECTION
William (son of Frederick) had the following children: Mary E. (1841), Pauline (1836) George E. or L. (1845) William L (1847) Elbert (1848) and Elvin (1856). George was a veteran of the War between the States (Co. E. , 61st Tenn. Mounted Infantry), and was the start of the Illinois Group.
Elbert's full name was Elbert Seviver Almaroad and his wife's name was Mary. His children were Mattie E. (1873), James Wilson (1876), George D. (1881) Elsie (1894). There appears to have been another child named Joe (1902). There may have been others and also the good possiblity that Mary was a second wife and that some of these children were half-brothers and sisters.

In 1910 Elbert was living with his wife Mary in Calhoun County, AL. James W. and George L were also in Calhoun, County. It appears they came from TN. between 1905 and 1910. The Alabama Almaroads are descended from this line.
Many of thes names look like repeats because frequently children were named for brothers and sisters etc. A good example is David's son William named his children Pauline, James, Floyd, Simon and Elizabeth. All repeats.
It appears that the present spelling came into being around 1850. It is probably an anglization since rode and road sound the same in English. The name itself is most likely more than one thousand years old as there is mention of a Peter Almerlode around 1000 A.D. He was one of the founders of the University of Paris, but is believed to have been from where present day Belgium is located.
THE VIRGINIA CONNECTION
Next is George Almarode, sometimes spelled Almeroth. George was in Augusta County, VA as early as the 1780's. He show up in a number of records of that County. George at least had one son (Frederick Almarode) and two daughters (Eve and Elizabeth Almorode) NOTE: All spelling are as they appear in the records. Frederick married Jane Benson, daughter of William Benson (Augusta County, VA) on 22 August 1799. Eve married a John Lotts on 11 March 1799 and Elizabeth married a Samuel Minnick on 16 May 1800. Frederick's known children were Trust (1801), William (1802), David (1807), John (1808-1810) and Sophia (1812). There may have been others. Trust had a number of children, (Sarah Jane, Jane Amanda, Phillip George and Sophia Ann). may records are available on these and It appears that they remained in Virginia and are still there. (We are still around here, mostly in Augusta County, VA.)
THE TENNESSEE CONNECTION
David and William moved to Sullivan Co. TN. (Blountsville) between 1830-1840. John went to Overton County, TN. All appear to have been blacksmiths. David's wife was Jane. At least four children were born and reached maturity. Simon Peter (1827), William H. (1831), Louisa (1834), and Margaret (1838). John married a woman named Sarah Bosserman on 6 November 1837. Little else has been found except that he appeard to have moved back to Virginia and then back to Tennessee. (I think this is Isaac's son John and not Frederick's. Isaac is a brother of Frederick not mentioned earlier) Little also is know of his children, but it can be ascertained that he had a number of grandchildren, Charlie (1858), William W. (1859), Berry (1860), Robert P. (1862) and Susan (1864). There is a possiblility that in fact John had a second marriage and these could be his children. Many of the present day Tennessee Almaroads are descended from this group.

CONCLUSION
Since the name in unusual, and there appears to be less than 50 families carrying the name in the United States, it is more than possible that all are descended from Peter and Anna. Many keys are available. Lancaster County, PA. is very close to Augusta County, VA The fact there is no other listing of any 19th or 18th century Almaroads lead to this only possible conclusion.
Any inaccuracies, and there surely are some must be borne by the preparer. I have used all the standard research tools as guides such as censuses, list books and records. There is probably more out there.
