Johann Georg Almeroth
Born around 1760 some records show 1752
died in 1812
Married to Egidia Hawp born in 1747
date of death unknown
Hessian soldier and grenadier, from Hersfeld, Hesse-Kassel, enrolled 1775, age 24, and sent to America as a mercenary for the British. He probably fought against the Continental Army at the Battle of Trenton, 25 Dec 1776, following Washington's famous "crossing of the Delaware." In September, 1777, they conquered Philadelphia, capitol of the new nation, forcing the Continental Congress to relocate to York, PA, and by December had forced Washington and his army back to Valley Forge. Word of the French alliance arrived in May; and the British, fearful of being cut off by a French blockade of the river, withdrew to New York, 19 June 1778, pursued by the Continentals, recently trained by Prussian Baron von Steuben. Georg Almeroth was reported as deserted in June 1778. But he apparently remained in New York, and sent for his wife and two sons. The journal of Rev. G. C. Cöster, Chaplain to the Hessian soldiers, reported the confirmation of Friederich Almeroth, born March 1768 in Homberg, son of George and Egidia Almeroth, 1 Apr 1782, at Marston's Wharf, New York City.
1. At this time they had an English recording clerk that spelled names according to the way they sounded, so he spelled it Almarode. We are sure that same Geroge Almeroth came from Germany
2. Johann Georg Almerod born about 1750 in Hersfeid, Hesse-Kassel, Pruessen (Familysearch.com)
3. Information on Trust Almarode came from familysearch.com posted by William Newman of Lehi, Utah. This information is not provided in the documentation I have in Augusta Co. VA.
